<image:title>Blog - My Five Star Reads of 2022: Part 3 - Book 28: Love Times Infinity by Lane Clarke (October)</image:title>
<image:caption>I need to know why more people are not talking about this book because this thing is so funny and sweet while also talking about hard topics. The book is about Michie, a high school junior, living with her grandmother who dreams of going to Brown University one day. But the essay questions asking about her identity are making her question things about her life, including the relationship with her estranged mother. Michie has had her walls up high since her mother left years ago and only a handful of people have managed to squeeze through them. But now the new kid, basketball-playing Derek, is making her consider taking them down, because even though she believes herself to be invisible, neither Derek nor her best friend, Jojo, will let her fade into the background. While romance is a part of this book, the friendship and support that Jojo and Derek give Michie is the real star as she deals with her difficult past. Michie gives them support too in her own ways and it's an amazing friendship group to see. Also, the basketball game scene will live rent-free in my head for a long time. If you want to try this book out, do check out trigger warnings for the topics it covers. It's like Heartstopper in the sense that while nothing happens on the page, it is discussed a lot throughout the book.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - My Five Star Reads of 2022: Part 3 - Book 32: Steal Like an Artist by Austin Kleon (October)</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the only other non-fiction to grace my five-star reads this year. I'm always trying to read books that will challenge me to do more as a creator. This is the book that inspired me to start this blog. In this book, Kleon talks about how you can bring out the creativity in you, which sounds very corny, but it's filled with helpful tips. One of the things that this book talks about is the reality of being a creative and the things you are going to have to do if you want to be a full-time creative. Sometimes it's things you want to be ignorant about but you really don't have that option if you want to make a living from it. Some people have critiqued that the advice in the book can be very generic, but I believe that just means that you don't only have to be a creative to use this advice. Any advice that pushes you to do more and do better than you were before has to be good to an extent. If you're in a rut with your creative pursuits, I highly recommend this one.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - My Five Star Reads of 2022: Part 3 - Book 33: The Heartstopper Yearbook by Alice Oseman (November)</image:title>
<image:caption>If you have been on my Instagram for a minute, you know how much I love Heartstopper, so it's no surprise when any Heartstopper-related content shows up on my five-star reads list. This book is basically just extra content and behind the scenes of the making of the comics. Also, the drawings and comics in the books are in color, which is different from the original comics and is a nice touch. The book also has a mini Tara and Darcy comic in it that made my heart so happy to read. It's about the moment when they became girlfriends and it was so sweet to see them being awkward about asking. Overall, this book is for people who are already fans of the comics so if you love the books, you'll enjoy this.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - My Five Star Reads of 2022: Part 3 - Book 34: The Geek Who Saved Christmas by Annabeth Albert (December)</image:title>
<image:caption>This book starts what I called the month of five stars. Exactly half of the books I read were five stars which is always a great thing for a reader. I was in the mood for Christmas-themed books around the end of the year and this one was on Kindle Unlimited, so I decided to give it a try. Here we have a dual-pov romance between Gideon Holiday, a super organized Christmas fiend, and Paul Frost, a handyman with a cold exterior. They are next-door neighbors and while everyone else in the neighborhood is glad to accept Gideon's gleeful offers to help out, Paul is very much fine keeping to himself, especially during Christmas. But when Paul's beloved younger brother is set to come into town for a Holly Jolly Christmas, he finds himself on Gideon's doorstep asking for help decking the halls. Gideon is more than happy to help and in their quest to make a perfect Christmas, Paul and Gideon start to realize that they might be perfect for each other. Again, another sweet romance with very minimal drama and a little spice. It's even advertised as low-angst and truly no super stressful or tense moments happened here, making this a perfect read for someone who loves a good holiday rom-com.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - My Five Star Reads of 2022: Part 3 - Book 35: Consider Me by Becka Mack (December)</image:title>
<image:caption>After Icebreaker, I decided to try more sports romances, specifically hockey ones, even though I don't know the first thing about the sport. This one came highly recommended if you like Icebreaker and the authors are friends and writing buddies so I had high hopes going into this one. They were met, to say the least. In this book, we follow Carter Beckett, a notorious playboy hockey captain, and Olivia Parker, a sassy high school gym teacher. Olivia is the best friend of Carter's best friend's girlfriend, and he is warned not to play his games with her. But when he approaches her anyway, she wants nothing to do with him because his reputation proceeds him. Everyone in Carter's immediate circle is cautious of Carter pursuing Ollie and hurting her in the process. Cue Carter turning into a simp so he can have a chance to date her, and the boy is down bad. There is no other way to put it. HE. IS. DOWN. BAD. And is willing to do whatever it takes to get Ollie to consider him and I loved it. Besides being super sweet, this book is spicy and hilarious and I love that in a book. It's on Kindle Unlimited so if you are interested in it, I would give it a try there.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - My Five Star Reads of 2022: Part 3 - Book 36: Twisted Lies by Ana Huang (December)</image:title>
<image:caption>Okay, so I got hyped into picking up the Twisted Series, and you know what I don't have any regrets. I enjoyed all of the earlier books in this series, but this one is by far my favorite. Mainly because it fits into my growing love for dark romance. The final book in this series follows Stella Alonso, a fashion-loving influencer, and Christian Harper, the CEO of a security agency, who also owns the apartment complex where he and Stella lives. They have already been acquainted with each other in previous books but things take a turn when Stella needs a boyfriend so she has a better chance of getting the brand deal of her dreams. Christian agrees to it but their platonic relationship shifts again when a stalker is trying to get closer to Stella. And while Christian wants to keep his distance, he's not gonna let anyone hurt Stella. Now, this book is a slow burn which can be very annoying when you're screaming at your tablet "JUST KISS ALREADY!" but it worked for me here. Also, Christian is a very morally grey character because his business isn't what it seems, but it just feeds into why he's so protective of Stella. Along with this, Christian just really wants to see Stella succeed and even helps her make a business plan, which we love to see. But the more thrilling elements of this book are what pushed it over the edge for me and, as with all the Twisted books, we see a guy who supports his girl in all of her endeavors, and I love that.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This one was a nostalgic read from my parents' library. Nothing too serious but it just brings back so many good memories for me that I had to give it five stars. It is a cute collection of riddles that clues to different things and the things are done in alphabetical order. As someone who has always loved riddles and mysteries, it's just fun for me to see how other people have constructed riddles to get people to guess certain items. Also, the illustrations in this book are really pretty.</image:caption>

<image:caption>After reading Blackout, I was so excited to learn that the same author group came together again to write another interconnected anthology set in a snowstorm this time. This time around the main thing that is connecting the story is Stevie, an overly rational science nerd, who is trying to pull off the biggest apology to her girlfriend (well hopefully still girlfriend), Sola, after she messed up big time. Her friends are all scrambling around Georgia to get her the things she needs but she never accounted for the most unlikely of snow storms to hit their city. As Stevie works to get everything done in time, her friends find and fix their own love stories along the way. This book was so much fun and each story was so sweet in its own way. Also, it was a lot of friends-to-lovers stories which I am obsessed with so this made my heart so happy to read it and I highly recommend it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - My Five Star Reads of 2022: Part 3 - Book 39: Zachary Ying and the Dragon Emperor by Xiran Jay Zhao</image:title>
<image:caption>I feel that it's appropriate that my last book of the year and this list starts with Z, it just feels right. That's the whole reason I picked up this book in the first place. I needed a book that started with Z for my alphabet reading challenge, and I got lucky with finding this one in my local bookstore. But even better, it ended up not being just a challenge read because I loved it! Zachary Ying has not learned much about his Chinese heritage which bothers him sometimes but he tries not to press his single mother about it and just wants to fit in at school. But it turns out knowing a thing or two about Chinese history would have been helpful because he was chosen to host the spirit of the First Emperor of China to help seal a portal to the Chinese underworld where demons are ready to break free during the Ghost Month. But something goes wrong and Emperor Qin Shi Huang ends up bonding to Zack's VR headset instead of his body. So now, he and two other kids who are hosting emperor spirits must figure out how to boost Zack's connection to Chinese history in order to help him gain the strength he needs so they can seal the portal. This book was so well done and so informative. Because Zack is such a noob when it comes to his Chinese heritage, a lot of things about Chinese history are explained in this book and, if you grew up in America like me and Zack, all of this information is so interesting to learn about because it is never talked about in our history classes. Also, it makes the book feel less info-dumpy because you know why all of these things have to be explained to the character and you want them to be explained because you want to hear them too. I'm going to need the next book soon because that was such an amazing rollercoaster of a book that I loved to ride again.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - My Five-Star Reads of 2022: Part 2 - Book 13: I Kissed Shara Wheeler by Casey McQuiston (June)</image:title>
<image:caption>This book... this book is incredible, and I will not accept any slander towards it. Give me a rom-com mystery any day but sprinkle some academic rivals' sexual tension in there, and I am sold. That's what we got with this book. Chloe Green has been at odds with the perfect prom queen Shara Wheeler since she moved to Alabama for high school. Shara is the only thing that's keeping her from being Valedictorian, a coveted prize she has always wanted. But then, a month before graduation, Shara kisses Chloe out of nowhere, disappears from town soon after, and no one knows where to find her. The only things she left behind were letters on her perfect pink stationery to Chloe, her long-time quarterback boyfriend, Smith, and her bad boy neighbor with a crush, Rory, all of whom she kissed before she left. While this could mean that the title of Valedictorian was Chloe's, she wants to win fair-and-square, and she and the boys want answers, so they go on the hunt to find Shara using the clues she left behind uncovering a lot of things along the way. This book is witty, has great social commentary on a bunch of topics, and again, academic rivals' sexual tension... There's not much more I can say about this book, it's a yes, period.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - My Five-Star Reads of 2022: Part 2 - Book 14: They Never Learn by Layne Fargo (June)</image:title>
<image:caption>Okay, this book is another banger that hits that same spot of catharsis I get while watching Criminal Minds. I need to read more thrillers, and it's because of this book right here. We follow the story of two women, Scarlett Clark and Carly Schiller. Scarlett is an English Professor who has a side hustle of killing shitty men, specifically those who abuse or r*pe, and I'm sorry, we stan her for it. But when people finally start to speculate about the random deaths around campus, it throws a wrench in her plan for her latest kill. Carly is a freshman student at the same university who is ready to start living out of the shadow of her emotionally abusive father. But when her new friend/roommate is assaulted, she starts to wonder if she can make her revenge fantasies a reality. Now usually, I don't give these types of books five stars because these are not the things we want to support people doing. But this book did it right, and I never saw the plot twist coming, and once it was revealed it made the whole story that much better. I love how these stories intertwined, and the book had very short chapters which allowed me to read it in about two hours. Seriously, so good and highly recommended if you're into the Criminal Minds type of content.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Okay, you know the drill. It's a rom-com with a good premise, and it was executed well! Now, this story follows a Bachelor TV Show production, and I do not watch or want to watch the Bachelor, so I was hesitant going into it, but the twist this book did on the idea made it work for me. We mainly follow Dev Deshpande, a hopeless romantic who is a producer on a reality dating show named Ever After, where he helps curate fairytale romances while his love life is in shambles. But this season, he has his work cut out for him when disgraced tech wunderkind Charlie Winshaw is made this season's bachelor. Charlie is a stiff, awkward, anxious mess, and somehow Dev is going to have to coach him into being the perfect Prince Charming for the show. But as they spend more time together, Charlie is more into Dev than any of the female contestants, which could cause a problem for the curated TV show romance the network wants. I don't know what it is about anxious and awkward characters named Charlie, but I connect with them so much. Not to mention I loved the showrunner and contestant dynamic in this book, which made me like the Bachelor-Esque setting more. In fact, I tried to read another book with a similar premise soon after, and I didn't like it as much because it was the usual bachelor and contestant dynamic. But this one not only did this romance right but had good discussions about sexuality and mental health. One of my top books of the year.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This book almost didn't make it onto this list. When I first started reading it, I wasn't too enthralled by it, but by the end of it, I saw myself so much in the book that I just had to give it five stars. Here we are following, Winnie who spends the summers working at her Grandmother's diner and is living her best fat girl life! This particular summer is bittersweet though because it's the last one before she goes to college, but she intends to make the most of it with her cousin, brother, and ungirlfriend. But her simple plans go out of the door when she is voted to be Misty Haven's Summer Queen, which not only thrusts her into the spotlight but has her matchmade with a guy she's always had a bit of a crush on. Now she is forced to confront her fears and realize some things about herself and the relationships in her life. This book is not for everyone. The way some things are explained in this book can be a bit confusing, like the term ungirlfriend itself and how some of the plot points came to be, but overall this was a book that I saw a lot of myself in. Fat girls finding their confidence will most likely always be a hit with me, and Winnie's complicated relationship with her friends and family is so relatable. If you're intrigued by this book at all, I would give it a try.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - My Five-Star Reads of 2022: Part 2 - Book 17: Little Leaders: Exceptional Men in Black History by Vashti Harrison (July)</image:title>
<image:caption>This is one of the only nonfiction books on this list, mostly because I don't read a lot of them, and when I do read them I don't usually get the vibe of "this is a brilliant and lovable book that deserves five stars." But this one gets that badge of honor. This book documents exceptional men in black history, which you can probably glean from the title. Every man gets a small biography talking about their early life up to the work that got them a spot in this book. The main reason I gave it five stars is that it introduced me to some historical figures that I never heard of. Any book that teaches some underrated knowledge has a good chance of getting a five-star rating with me.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - My Five-Star Reads of 2022: Part 2 - Book 18: Act Your Age, Eve Brown by Talia Hibbert (July)</image:title>
<image:caption>Two of the Brown Sisters ended up making this list which is a sign that I will have to pick up more Talia Hibbert books in 2023. This time around, we are following Eve, the youngest Brown sister, who, for lack of a better word, struggles to keep a job down, and after her latest stunt, her parents are putting their foot down and telling her she needs to grow up. Eve sets out on her own to get a job and prove everyone wrong... and ends up running over a Bed and Breakfast owner in the process. Jacob Wayne, a straight-laced perfectionist, was already short-staffed at his B&B but now his injured arm forces him to hire the Purple-Haired Whirlwind of a Woman who ran him over in the first place. But as the two start working together, they start to find out that they balance each other out, in more ways than one. This book is another one where I saw a lot of myself in the main character, both Eve and Jacob, in different ways. We also see some autistic rep and show how Jacob deals with ableism along with Eve trying to figure out what she wants to do with her life, a very relatable thing for me right now. This is a very sweet read, and I highly recommend it. *Note: If you are wondering why Dani's book didn't make it on this list, it got four stars because the miscommunication issue in there annoyed me too much to give it five stars.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - My Five-Star Reads of 2022: Part 2 - Book 19: One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston (July)</image:title>
<image:caption>This was the final Casey McQuiston book I needed to read to be up to date with all their releases, and this one firmly made me a CMQ Stan! This book is about August, who moves to New York City to finally finish her bachelor's degree and ends up living with an interesting collection of roommates. She's a perfectly cynical person who is not going to be drawn in by the magic of the city or any romance nonsense. But then she meets Jane, a woman who is a regular on her commute home from working at a pancake diner. Jane is edgy, dazzling, and mysterious. Mysterious as in she seems to be from a different time altogether, and when August starts to investigate, she finds out that Jane HAS been displaced in time from the 1970s and doesn't realize it. Now, August is determined to help Jane, and it's probably gonna take some magic and romance to do so. This book is magical realism if you didn't glean that from the description, which is a genre I don't explore often, but this one was done so well! We have a cast that spreads across the race and LGBTQ+ spectrum and a main character who starts to believe in something again. It just pulls at the heartstrings, and it's hilarious, please read it!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - My Five-Star Reads of 2022: Part 2 - Book 20: Wonderstruck by Brian Selznick (August)</image:title>
<image:caption>A lot of people will say that picture books are for kids, but as a visual person, I always enjoy a story that uses illustrations, and I wish more books made for adult audiences would use them. Imagine it, High Fantasy books with drawn-in castles and drawings of the actual scenes! One of my writing dreams honestly. Regardless, Wonderstruck is one such book that does a great job of blending words and illustrations to make a cohesive narrative. The book is about two characters who grew up at different points two different points in time, Ben from Minnesota in 1977, and Rose from New Jersey 50 years earlier. Both of them feel like outcasts in their life, and they are searching for something that they hope will help them belong. Ben is looking for the father his mother never talked about, and Rose is hoping to see the actress who has captivated her on-screen in person. In their search for these things, Ben and Rose discover something more amazing. Ben's story is told with words and Rose's with pictures and at moments what's drawn mirrors part of Ben's story, and it all just works so well together. The story also has a surprisingly great depiction of museums which I appreciated as someone who wants to visit more of them. Definitely worth the read, especially if you want a longer book on your TBR.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - My Five-Star Reads of 2022: Part 2 - Book 21: Scarlet by Marissa Meyer (August)</image:title>
<image:caption>Okay, I put off reading the Lunar Chronicles for too long and I don't know why. I read Cinder the previous year, and I wholeheartedly enjoyed it. It was also the first book I threw across a room after that ending... good times. I love fairy tale retellings, and this one did a great job of expanding the lore of the world Marissa Meyer created. (SPOILERY-ISH THINGS AHEAD IF YOU HAVEN'T READ CINDER!!!) This book starts by introducing us to Scarlet, a fiery redhead who is determined to figure out what happened to her Grandmother, who went missing a couple of weeks ago. Everybody in their small French town is convinced she went nuts, but Scarlet refuses to believe that. In the pursuit to find her, Scarlet works with a street fighter named Wolf, who is probably the only person who could help her succeed in her quest. Meanwhile, Cinder needs to break out of prison and figure out a plan if she's gonna overthrow Queen Levana. (END OF SPOILERY-ISH THINGS) This book does a great job of keeping the momentum going from the first book, which not many sequels can do. It also does a good job of not only foreshadowing future characters and events but intertwining Scarlet and Cinder's stories together. In short, the series builds upon the foundation Cinder laid amazingly. If you're looking for a good sci-fi series, this is my recommendation.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - My Five-Star Reads of 2022: Part 2 - Book 22: Icebreaker by Hannah Grace (August)</image:title>
<image:caption>God, I cannot explain the chokehold this book had on me when I first read it. I finished it on release day on Kindle Unlimted and then bought the physical copy to annotate immediately. I had never done that before, but I do it now because of this book. This is a dual-pov romance about Anastasia "Stassie" Allen, a determined ice queen of a figure skater, and Nathan "Nate" Hawkins, a loyal golden retriever of a hockey player. Both are determined to be the best in their respective university sports, but despite the amount of time they both spend on the ice, their paths have never crossed. Until a prank causes the hockey rink to shut down and means the hockey boys have to share a rink with figure skaters, which Stassie is less than thrilled about. But Nate is determined to make the best of the situation and tries to build a friendship with Stassie, which she is reluctant to do, but there is clearly something there, and they can only deny it for so long. Not gonna lie, the first few chapters were not my fave, but once we got into the meat of the story, I was hooked. Stassie and Nate are electric together, and they balance each other out so well. And don't let the cover fool you, this book is SPICY and not sex shy at all, yet it still has super sweet and heartwarming friendship moments with their extended friend group. Overall, this book was a breath of fresh air, and I can't wait to continue this series when the next book is out.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - My Five-Star Reads of 2022: Part 2 - Book 23: Ready Player One by Ernest Cline (August)</image:title>
<image:caption>Before I say anything about this book, I am telling you to get the audiobook for it. It is read by Will Wheaton, who is the perfect nerd to read this super nerdy story. This book is about Wade Watts, a teen living in a dystopian world ravaged by climate change and greed, where the only thing to live for is the virtual reality world of the OASIS. The OASIS is where everyone lives, the only things they don't do there are eat, sleep, or go to the bathroom. The creator of the OASIS, James Halliday, is revered for his invention and when he died, he left an easter egg behind that would grant the finder control of the entire simulation. Wade, a Halliday aficionado, dreams of finding the Easter Egg, getting rich, and leaving his dingy life behind, and one day, he finds a clue to the first key to the egg. This sets off a race to the finish between Wade, the other egg hunters (Gunters), and most importantly, Innovative Online Industries (IOI), a company determined to turn the free OASIS into a money-grabbing machine. This book is filled with 80s nostalgia, highlighting the height of early video games, and you can tell that this was written by a nerd. It was filled with so much passion for 80s movies, tv shows, music, and games, and I loved that aspect of it. If you are coming from the movie, please note that it is COMPLETELY different from the book, as in, many plot points are different. But the heart of nostalgia, the love for gaming, and living in the real world are still there, and I love both for different reasons.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I went to school for Environmental Science, so this book is near and dear to my academic heart because it's one of the few iconic books that talk about this topic. The Lorax is a story about how a gloomy dark world without trees came to be. Dr. Seuss wrote it as a cautionary tale, and I think that comes through perfectly in the narrative. It also reinforces the idea that if one person steps up to make a difference, things can and will get done, which is always a good message to share.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - My Five-Star Reads of 2022: Part 2 - Book 27: Spy x Family Vol 4 by Tatsuya Endo (September)</image:title>
<image:caption>I had not tried much manga before this year and the two I read before this series didn't stick with me. But nothing will ever beat the found family trope. The series follows Master Spy Twilight, who needs a fake family for his latest mission to infiltrate a school and get close to a head of state who has the power to set off a war. He achieves this goal but he has no idea that the wife he acquired is an assassin or that his adopted daughter is a telepath, who knows about everything going on and is loving the excitement of her parents' secret lives. The main reason that Volume 4 has made its way onto this list is that we complete the little family with a pet, a dog who can see the future. I'm a sucker for animal companions so adding the dog to the found family unit made my heart so happy. The anime for this series is my first, and therefore it holds a special place in my heart, and I highly recommend the manga and the anime.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - My Five-Star Reads of 2022: Part 1 - Book 1: Midnight in Everwood by M. A. Kuzniar (January)</image:title>
<image:caption>This is a book that I wanted to read in December of the previous year but I didn't around to. Regardless, I was still very excited about this book going into January, so I picked it up early in the month. Growing up a ballerina, I danced in multiple forms of the Nutcracker, so reading a Nutcracker retelling was so nostalgic for me. I picked up on so many little nods to the ballet and the author used some ballet terminology in her writing which helped me visualize the whole thing perfectly. The story follows an aspiring ballet dancer named Marietta Stelle, who is about to be forced to give up her passion for dance for marriage. Her potential suitor makes an elaborate stage for what is supposed to be her final performance, and the magic present there ends up transporting her to the snowy and sugary world of Everwood. While there, she is made the dancing pet of the sadistic King and kept locked up with two other women in a glass sugar tower under the watch of the Captain of the King's Guard. The whole story is filled with whimsical imagery and a fun plot of rebellion where Marietta makes friends and finds love that truly makes her build an inner strength she didn't know she had, and I love that in stories. This was such a beautiful book in more ways than one, and if you love whimsical stories or are a ballerina, I highly recommend this one.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - My Five-Star Reads of 2022: Part 1 - Book 2: Blackout by Dhionelle Clayton, Tiffany D. Jackson, Nic Stone, Angie Thomas, Ashley Woodfolk, and Nicola Yoon (February)</image:title>
<image:caption>This book is what I love about anthologies. The way that these stories intertwined into one narrative was so satisfying, and I truly enjoyed each of the stories in their own right. In this, we follow twelve young black teens during a Blackout in New York that intertwines the stories together along with a party that is happening to keep up spirits while the lights are out. Each story follows a different love story, and each of them made my heart happy in different ways. One of the stories is interspersed throughout the rest of them to help show the passage of time, and I like how that one was executed. Also, another story was a Friends to Lovers story, and I am a sucker for that trope. Overall, it was a really sweet collection of stories and a celebration of Black Joy and Love, which I adored.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - My Five-Star Reads of 2022: Part 1 - Book 3: The Soulmate Equation by Christina Lauren (February)</image:title>
<image:caption>After reading and loving the Unhoneymooners last year, I decided to try another Christina Lauren book, and this one was SO GOOD! We love a quirky rom-com premise, and this one takes the cake. A Single Mom Freelance Statistician and a Corporate Matchmaker Scientist get matched via his DNA matchmaking service. Say less! This is what I want in a rom-com! And it is executed so well with the hilarious rom-com hijinks and the sweet moments where Jess and River start to realize they are a good match for each other. Along with Jess's daughter, Juno, her best friend, Fizzy, and her beloved Grandparents, this cast is just so lovable, and I truly adore watching Jess and Juno getting to know River and being a little family. Christina Lauren does a great job of highlighting the small moments of building a relationship, which I love. Such a cute and lovable story and I can't wait for Fizzy's story to come out in 2023!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - My Five-Star Reads of 2022: Part 1 - Book 4: Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert (March)</image:title>
<image:caption>If you haven't figured it out already, 2022 was the year I started to figure out how much I love reading Rom-Coms. Give me a fun romance premise that is executed well, and I will be there. The Brown Sisters series had been on my radar for a minute, and this was the year to give it a try. In this first book, we follow Chloe, the oldest of the sisters, who has been living in a rut for a long time. After a near-death experience, she decides to strike out on her own and start living a more spontaneous life following her carefully curated list of goals. But she needs someone to help her do it. Enter her apartment super and motorcycle riding bad boy, Red. The two do not have the best first impressions of each other, but they learn to see past that, and they start to help each other in different ways. All of this, along with a cute cat, sister shenanigans, and the flourishing love between them made this such a fun read.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - My Five-Star Reads of 2022: Part 1 - Book 5: The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune (March)</image:title>
<image:caption>Okay, this book took over Bookstagram and Booktok for ages... and for good reason! Y'all, this book is the epitome of cozy fantasy feels, and I love it! Usually, you read books, and you're waiting for the big drop or the scary drama to come in, and you don't get that with this book. Don't get me wrong there is some drama and angst, but it's not too much to the point where you can feel your heart drop, and I love that in a book. In this book, we follow Linus Baker who works for the Department in Charge of Magical youth as a case worker, where he decides if magical youth can stay in their current designated homes or if they should be moved somewhere else. His latest case takes him to the Marsyas Island Orphanage, a house of six misfit children run by Arthur Parnassus, and Extremely Upper Management wants him to determine if this home should be disbanded. The quiet Linus goes to stay in this home with a gnome, wyvern, and the Anti-Christ, though we don't like that term here, to determine just that. During his time there, Linus starts to care for not only the children but Arthur as well, which makes staying objective in his job all the more difficult. Again, this book has all the cozy found family feels, and the drama is minimal, which I love. I highly recommend the audiobook read by Daniel Henning for this one because he does different voices for each character, which just enhances the whimsical and fun reading experience.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - My Five-Star Reads of 2022: Part 1 - Book 10: The Summer of Chasing Mermaids by Sarah Ockler (May)</image:title>
<image:caption>I love a good Fairytale Retelling, and the Little Mermaid does not get retold often enough. This particular retelling hit right for me because I happened to be on vacation in a waterfront small town then, so I loved the setting of a beachfront Oregon small town at the time. I read this whole book within 24 hours of starting it. In this story, we follow Elyse, a girl from Tobago who is spending the summer at her aunt's after a boating accident took away her voice and her budding singing career with her twin sister. She works in her aunt's shop and spends time writing out her thoughts on the walls of an old boat, where she ends up running into a boy named Christian, who vacations in the town with his family every summer and is a bit of a playboy. In a turn of events, Elyse ends up being recruited to help Christian fix up his boat for the annual regatta, and as she spends more time with him, she ends up falling for him herself, which both scares and excites her. The book is a beautiful summertime read, and beyond Elyse and Christian, I loved Sebastian, Christian's little brother who loves mermaids, and believes Elyse is the incarnation of the local mermaid legend and would love to be a mermaid himself. Everything in this book comes together so well, and it's so cozy and romantic with a little spice, and we see Elyse start to find her voice again, which is a character arc I love to read about.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - My Five-Star Reads of 2022: Part 1 - Book 11: There's Something about Sweetie by Sandhya Menon (May)</image:title>
<image:caption>This is another book that I read on my vacation and again I read it in 24 hours. Another rom-com that just hit all the right places for me and it was so sweet and inspiring at the same time. In this book, Ashish Patel has been unlucky in love especially after getting dumped by his last girlfriend, which is affecting his basketball game. His parents were already on his case and wanted to match him with a good Indian-American girl and in a moment of weakness, he allows them to set him up. Enter Sweetie Nair, a fat singer and track star, whose parents can't see past her size, so much so that they don't want her to be matched with Ashish because of what people might say. But Sweetie is sick of people seeing nothing but her size and she takes it upon herself to go on the dates that Ashish's parents curated for them. In the process, Ashish and Sweetie start to fall for one another, and I love how their love story comes about. Ashish and Sweetie's relationship might have been arranged but they truly start to respect one another and love builds from there which is great to see in a YA novel. Along with that, Sweetie is fat and she embraces it, which is inspiring for a fat girl like me, and she won't let anyone makes her feel self-conscious about it, even her mother. There are just so many good things in the book from the representation to the romance and I highly recommend it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - My Five-Star Reads of 2022: Part 1 - Book 12: A Good Girl's Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson (May)</image:title>
<image:caption>This book was my final vacation read and it seems I had amazing luck during that trip because this turned out to be the third five-star book in a row I read during that time again in 24 hours. I hadn't read a mystery book in a while, and this book reminded me why I love them and why I need to read more. Here we follow the curious and ambitious Pippa Fitz-Amobi who is trying to figure out what really happened to Andie Bell, a popular schoolgirl who went missing years ago and was presumed murdered by her boyfriend Sal Singh who was found dead a couple of days later. For her senior project, she wants to find the truth and she enlists Sal's younger brother, Ravi, to help her, even though she was not supposed to contact either family via her teacher's rules for doing the project. Pip is a detective that you love following because she will do anything to find out the truth about what happened. It also touches on some hard topics, so do check out trigger warnings. But I also loved Pip and Ravi's detective and assistant dynamic and how everything unfolds in the story as she finds all the pieces of the puzzle to find out the truth. If you want a story that keeps you guessing, I highly recommend this book, and I can't wait to finish the series. (Note: I have the second book, but I'm waiting until the final book comes out in paperback to keep my books matching, and so I can read them both in succession. When I have all the remaining books in a series, I'm more likely to finish it all in one go.)</image:caption>
